The Challenge

Decimal has a fully remote staff of 100 employees across 27 states and five countries. Without the right guardrails in place, that adds up to serious security risk—for the company itself and the thousands of small businesses it’s handled finances for over the last five years.

“It’s really important, for ourselves and our clients, to guarantee that all of our data is as secure as possible,” said Matt Tait, Decimal’s CEO, who preached the need for controls in case any dicey IT threats pop up. “As a remote employer, you don’t want to micromanage your team. But you do want the ability to shut devices off or lock them down,” he said.

But, like most startups looking to scale, Decimal wanted to keep its back office lean. “We knew we were going to grow fast and didn’t want to pay people to do a ton of IT work,” Matt said. He was also wary of juggling different vendors for device purchasing, device management, and app provisioning. And he didn’t want employees juggling countless logins for all their work accounts.

For airtight security, without breaking the bank or piling onto Decimal’s tech stack, one standout platform caught Matt’s eye.

“The minute we started hiring people, we signed up with Rippling,” Matt said. Decimal handles all its IT functions through the platform, which safeguards all the devices and data across its remote workforce.

“I really cannot understand trying to run an IT infrastructure without having a system like Rippling that just makes it easy.”

Rippling allows us to enter our next phase of evolution as a company. To know that we have the foundational support of a really good IT infrastructure is going to make that phase easy.

Ironclad controls

With Rippling’s Mobile Device Management, Matt can rest easy knowing laptops are secure, software is up-to-date, and work devices are easy to lock and wipe if an employee loses them or leaves the company. “IT security in multiple states and countries and having remote access to equipment has been a game changer for us,” he said.

Darrin Peters, who leads Decimal’s IT department, echoed Rippling’s sturdy security framework. “I really appreciate the convenience of knowing all our devices are fully protected against potential viruses or malicious downloads,” he said. “SentinelOne makes it easy to monitor and view a detailed log of threats for each device, giving us both confidence and control over our security."

Rippling also helped the company get and maintain SOC 2 compliance. And Theresa Cava, Decimal’s Director of Finance, People and Controller, uses the system to run reports on which devices need software updates and which need to be replaced. “If I had Excel sheets for that, I’d go crazy,” she said. “Being a remote team, I can’t just walk over and grab somebody’s computer.” Rippling fills the void—“I order new computers and they’re sent off to employees. That can save me months of work.”

Integrations galore

Matt appreciates that Rippling handles a laundry list of IT tasks and plays nice with the other tools in Decimal’s tech stack. “What I’ve seen throughout my career is that when a great software company keeps building features, they start shutting down integrations,” he said. “The fact that Rippling has great partnerships and continues to put out great products has been nice for us.”

With more than 600 integrations, Rippling helps Decimal automate and secure the entire device and user lifecycle.

A single source of truth

According to Matt, employees and admins both love that most of Decimal’s administrative to-dos flow through a single, unified platform. “Our employees are in peer groups of people who are constantly complaining about having to enter five different things in five systems and nothing updates and nothing actually works together,” he said. “Our team is like, ‘we log into one place that pretty much does everything we need.’”

Matt added that, just as Rippling helped hire Decimal’s first 100 employees, he thinks the platform’s IT support will be instrumental in the company growing even more in the years to come. “Rippling allows us to enter our next phase of evolution as a company,” he said. “To know that we have the foundational support of a really good IT infrastructure is going to make that phase easy.”

The Impact

  • Faster onboarding: Rippling saves Decimal five hours every time the company onboards a new hire.
  • Fewer IT issues:  Matt ran prior companies where IT support Slack channels fielded two issues a day. With Rippling, there’s less than one question a week.
  • Staying lean: Decimal has only one IT admin and one HR admin. “For a company of 100 people, that’s pretty awesome,” Matt said.
