When an employee’s fixed deductions (such as their benefits or pension contributions) exceed their total gross pay in a given pay period, it results in what’s called ‘negative net pay’ – i.e. where the employee ends up owing the company money instead.

In those situations, a Payroll admin would have to intervene manually to issue an advance, or push some deductions to a future pay period instead. But when the realisation of an employee’s negative net pay comes late in the day – or not at all – this can result in significant delay to the pay run.

However, sometimes admins don’t even discover this discrepancy until the last minute, while trying to approve a pay run or after finding that auto-approval has failed.

With this Recipe, you’ll get early notice of these potential issues before they become one. When an employee’s net pay will be negative in the next pay run, Rippling will send a notification automatically to the Payroll admin, alerting them to the issue.
