Manual hold-ups: ABW drained time updating HR systems after promotions, creating accounts for every new hire, and tracking benefits enrollment. 

Waning support: Customer support from ABW’s prior HR system, Paylocity, became less reliable after it began acquiring smaller companies to add to its services.

The Challenge

ABW Appliances left ADP and joined Paylocity to access better customer support. “Paylocity was great in the beginning,” said Rebecca Yost, the home appliance retailer’s HR Manager. “But as it bought up smaller companies to add different modules to its platform, the level of support started falling off.”

Rebecca had trouble getting prompt answers to time-sensitive questions. She also had trouble making changes to her HCM without Paylocity’s green light. For instance, when she created a new position on her team and wanted to customize security permissions to give the new hire needed access to HR data, she had to fill out a form, send it to Paylocity, and wait on the company to make the change on ABW’s behalf. “It took them three weeks to get the task done,” she said. In the meantime, the new hire had to sit idle without being able to start completing needed tasks.

ABW’s HR team members were also mired in time-consuming admin work. Whenever the company promoted an employee to a managerial role, HR had to manually update systems to make sure the new supervisor could approve timecards and leave requests. “I’d get emails from new managers saying they couldn’t approve so and so’s time off and I was like, ‘shoot. I forgot to check off that box,’” Rebecca said. She also relied on a printed-out checklist to make sure she handled all the needed onboarding tasks ahead of a new hire’s first day, manually set up new email accounts for new hires, and had to set constant calendar reminders to make sure employees enrolled in benefits on time.

ABW joined Rippling, which offered consistently reliable customer support and handy automations that took tedious manual work off the HR team’s plate. “Rippling made my life easier,” Rebecca said.

Time-saving automations

Rippling automatically handles tasks that used to eat up hours of Rebecca’s day. Now, when an employee gets promoted or switches roles, the platform updates permissions, org charts, payroll, and other systems according to the pre-configured specifications for the new position—without anyone lifting a finger. “Rippling handles all that stuff on the back-end automatically, so I don’t have to worry about it,” Rebecca said. 

Rebecca also set up onboarding automations to create Google Workspace accounts and distribute tax forms for new hires—so she doesn’t have to manually handle every task for every new hire or monitor progress from a printed checklist. She also set up automated reminders for employees to enroll in benefits after 60 days and 401(k)s after six months—so the team doesn’t have to keep track of a hodgepodge of start dates. “The workflows to automatically send out reminder emails have been a huge help,” she said.

Tireless support

Lackluster support was the driving force behind ABW first leaving ADP, then Paylocity. With Rippling, the company can access reliable assistance for any questions around the clock. “If I have an issue, I can live chat instead of sending an email,” Rebecca said. “That way I can resolve the issue right then and there instead of waiting for a response to come back to me.”

More control, better self-service

Rippling also gives ABW more autonomy over how it runs HR. Instead of waiting on a third party provider to update HCM permissions, Rebecca can assign granular, role-based rules that allow different employees to have customizable access to different systems. “The ability to have control in Rippling to do things myself was a huge selling point for me,” she said.

The company also now uses Rippling’s scheduling tool to assign shifts and track attendance across its seven work locations—giving Rebecca more visibility over her workforce. “We just click on the scheduling tool and we can see who’s working, which showroom they’re working in, and whether they’ve been assigned training.” Employees have an easier time viewing their shift allotments and clocking into work, while administrators have an easier time staffing across locations to meet demand fluctuations. According to Rebecca, employees found Rippling user-friendly and her HR team fielded fewer complaints from staff about how to punch in and out of work.
